Assessment of the media landscape in Central Asian countries (PCSC, current stage)
We have launched a project aimed at a thorough assessment of the existing state of independent media in Central Asian countries, with a particular focus on Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Our methodology includes a series of interviews with representatives of independent media, their sponsors, and members of civil society in each of the four countries.
The main emphasis is placed on a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness, performance, and relevance of independent media. We also investigate the impact of government media-related legislation in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, as well as the phenomenon of self-censorship in the journalistic communities of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. This analysis aims to identify the dynamics of the relationship between independent media and issues related to their self-sustainability through various monetization schemes and donor support.
The primary research focus areas encompass:
Objective 1. Comprehensive assessment of the media landscape:
- Media partners’ needs
- Relevance and effectiveness
- Efficiency and sustainability
- Impact on the public
Objective 2. Identification of uncovered gaps in funding:
- Analysis of financial needs
- Identification of areas requiring additional support from donors
We aim to provide a comprehensive and objective overview of the current media landscape in Central Asia and develop recommendations for further improvements. Stay updated on our website for detailed information on the progress and results of the research.
