The Media environment and disinformation in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan

Zinc Network is a full-service communications agency that assists governments, communities, businesses, and NGOs in addressing complex challenges of the modern world and achieving positive social change. Our internal capabilities include research, strategy development, media development, communications (including digital marketing), training, and capacity building. Zinc Network also collaborates with specialized organizations to shape policy, develop and deliver products and services, as well as organizational change and transformation programs.

At the moment, the organization is working on the “Open Information Partnership” (OIP) project. The OIP is a network of organizations working to counter disinformation in the EU and Eastern Partnership countries through research, social media monitoring, and journalism.

As part of the initiative’s expansion into Central Asia, Evidence CA conducted a preliminary study titled “Media and Disinformation Environment in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan,” aimed at understanding the media landscape and the prevalence of misinformation in these countries.

The study focused on examining the media landscape, the level of media freedom, platforms, and major channels of media and disinformation. This review provided insights into which measures could be effective in raising awareness about disinformation/countering it, considering the contexts of the countries and factors influencing media freedom.
