Agriculture remains a cornerstone of the Kyrgyz economy, as well as the economies of most developing countries, driving employment, food security, and export potential. Despite a vast body of technical and agronomic research dedicated to this sector, a significant gap persists in both domestic and international scholarship: a profound lack of understanding of the farmer as an economic decision-maker. While technical parameters—such as soil quality, climate, water resources, pastures, crop yields, and technologies—have been thoroughly examined, we know virtually nothing about how a farmer operates throughout the year, how they allocate resources, how they adapt to risks, or what decisions they make and why.
In practice, farming activities constitute more than a mere collection of agrotechnical processes; above all, they represent a sequence of daily decisions made under conditions of uncertainty, information asymmetry, and resource constraints. These decisions encompass sowing schedules, soil preparation methods, labor hiring, credit sourcing, storage techniques, and, ultimately, crop commercialization. Crucially, each decision directly impacts subsequent ones, thereby shaping the farm’s overall trajectory. While these choices can be rational, they are not strictly bound to be so—they are frequently influenced by risk aversion, subjective expectations, peer experiences, volatile market dynamics, or unpredictable weather conditions.
We possess an extensive array of studies addressing the agrotechnical and resource-related dimensions of farming. Notable examples include the Country Climate-Smart Agriculture Profile (World Bank, 2017); research on sustainable pasture management and livestock mobility (Schmidt et al., MRD, 2016); papers on land policy and property rights (Lerman & Sedik, FAO); gender-based access to resources (ADB, 2022); and analyses of storage infrastructure and post-harvest losses (FAO Brief, 2019). However, almost all of these works overlook the practical dynamics of farming as a time-distributed system of behavioral and organizational decisions.
The purpose of this study is to document and delineate the operational life cycle of a farmer in Kyrgyzstan over the course of a single agricultural season.
